When planning a family vacation, many parents look for activities and attractions that provide edutainment. For those who don’t know, edutainment is exactly what it sounds like — education and entertainment combined. When your family visits Colonial Williamsburg, your children won’t realize they’re learning thanks to all the fun they’re having. Considering all of the exciting things there are to do at Colonial Williamsburg for kids, your family may never want to leave.

Check out these educational (and fun) activities to do at Colonial Williamsburg for kids:

Rent a Costume

Is your child a hands-on learner? If so, help your child discover more about the past by renting a colonial costume. Your child can choose the costume he or she desires and wear it all throughout the day. Costume rentals can be found at the Visitor’s Center and at the open-air market in town.

If your child falls in love with the costume, don’t worry. You can purchase costume items, accessories, and more at the many shops in Colonial Williamsburg.

Visit Kid’s Corner

Planning a trip to Colonial Williamsburg for kids is a breeze thanks to the many kid-friendly activities available throughout the town. Kid’s Corner is a small cabin filled with games, crafts, activities, and exhibits designed exclusively for kids. Kids can write on slates, play with colonial toys, and ask the interpreters questions about life as a child in Colonial Williamsburg. For many children, this area is the highlight of their day at Colonial Williamsburg.

Find a Plant in the Colonial Nursery

Who said that children only learn about history while on a vacation to Colonial Williamsburg for kids? Throw some earth science into your educational adventure by exploring the Colonial Nursery. Your children can roam through the flowers, wreaths, and herbs and find the perfect one to bring home and plant. This is a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of plants and farming!

Tour Great Hopes Plantation

Great Hopes Plantation demonstrates how residents lived during the Revolutionary War. Kids will love seeing the livestock, exploring the cabins and buildings, and learning about the different trades. Great Hopes Plantation offers a wide variety of hands-on exhibits and activities for children to interact with, too.

Reserve a Carriage Ride

A trip to Colonial Williamsburg for kids isn’t complete without a horse-drawn carriage ride. Ride through Colonial Williamsburg in the comfort of an authentic carriage while you see the historic buildings and learn more about the past of our great nation.

Parents will love the opportunity to sit down for a bit and relax, while children can’t wait to watch the horses pull the carriage.

Participate in a Mock Trial

The Revolutionary period was an influential time for our nation, to say the least. Many crucial decisions about the laws of the land were made in the courthouse. Your family can take part in a mock trial at the Courthouse where you’ll hear cases for rights, liberty, property, and other notable issues.

Order in the Court’ is an interactive mock trial that helps teach children about the history of our judicial system. Many children are also shocked to learn what was considered to be a crime way back when. Due to the nature of the mock trial, this is best for children ages 8 and up.

Try Not to Be Frightened on the Tavern Ghost Walk

The best way to learn about the famous residents of Colonial Williamsburg is to meet their ghosts! Okay, hear about their ghosts…

The Tavern Ghost Walk is a friendly ghost tour around Colonial Williamsburg at night. The tour is spooky enough to give children a little fright, but not scary enough to create nightmares. While you never know if you’ll encounter the paranormal, the ghost tour is a great way to spend the night in Colonial Williamsburg for kids. This experience is recommended for children ages 6 and up.

Engage with the Interpreters

A trip to Colonial Williamsburg for kids will transport your entire family back in time thanks to the many interpreters and actors onsite. Kids and adults alike can interact with these trained professionals by asking them questions or participating in the many available activities. Go ahead and give it a try!

Play Colonial Games at the Benjamin Powell House

Let your children get a glimpse at what life in Colonial Williamsburg for kids was like by playing games at the Benjamin Powell House. Kids can play with other children, interact with interpreters, and even learn about the chores (gasp) children did during the colonial times.

Plan Your Trip to Colonial Williamsburg for Kids

From interactive games to participating in a court trial, there are so many ways for kids to learn at Colonial Williamsburg while having the time of their life. Plan your Colonial Williamsburg vacation with help from Reserve Williamsburg for discounted tickets, bundled hotel packages, and more travel benefits.

I’m a theme park nut. And really, what’s not to like? Thrilling rides, exciting shows and indulgent food are at every turn. At Busch Gardens Williamsburg, which has been rated the most beautiful theme park in America again and again, the appeal is even higher.

However, even at this park it’s all too easy to mess up your day by not being in-the-know. Don’t let that happen to you! These Busch Gardens Williamsburg tips navigate the do’s and don’ts of this European-themed amusement park.

Busch Gardens¨ Williamsburg offers adventures for the entire family. Attractions at the European-themed park range from world-class coasters to scenic river cruises. ©2016 SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Don’t Buy Your Tickets at the Gate

This is the first epic fail to avoid. At the gate you’ll pay full price. Who wants to do that? Book your tickets in advance with Reserve Williamsburg to save you time and money. Currently, Busch Gardens one-day tickets are only $62/adults–$15 lower than what you’ll fork over if you pay the day you play. Plus, the tickets are barcoded so you simply go straight to the gate, scan and go. So easy.

The legendary Loch Ness Monster¨, a double-looping serpentine roller coaster, looms over Busch Gardens¨ Williamsburg. Reaching 13 stories in height, this creature offers a spine-tingling ride at speeds approaching 60 mph. Do Scream Your Face Off

There’s no doubt about—Busch Gardens has some seriously excellent thrill rides. If you can only muster the courage to ride one, make it Griffon. And get ready to scream! A 205-foot, 90-degree, 75mph free fall will make your pulse pound and belly flip. Best (or worst) of all, is the anticipation before the drop.  Of course, roller coaster junkie’s need even more of a fix. Therefore, check out Apollo’s Chariot, a super smooth steel coaster with drastic drops, as well as Loch Ness Monster, a double-looping coaster with 60mph speeds and a 114-foot drop. I can’t leave out Verbolten though—that would be verboten! The multi-launch, indoor/outdoor roller coaster combines a tour of the autobahn with a multi-sensory dash through the Black Forest. It’s more than a roller coaster—it’s an experience!

Roll Out The Barrel debuted at Busch Gardens¨ in spring 2015. The live show, performed in the parkÕs Festhaus dining hall, follows a fictional German town as its residents celebrate their 40th annual town beer brewing festival. Roll Out The Barrel incorporates the best elements of the parkÕs repertoire of shows. Live musicians, singers and dancers join high-flying acrobats in this interactive musical about the intrepid brewers of this delightful German village. ©2016 SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Inc. Don’t Skip the Shows

Most people spend their day hopping from ride to ride, totally skipping the entertainment on-hand.  Big mistake. Huge. For one, Busch Gardens, with its European-theme, has a unique advantage over other parks: culture. The shows at this park feature the arts, music, customs and pop culture of our friends from across the pond. London Rocks take guests on a musical journey through the root of rock ‘n roll, while Roll Out The Barrel is an acrobatic showcase set in a German brewer’s village. Trust me when I say these shows can’t be found at any other amusement park.

BGW Fireworks 1

Do Stay Late for Fireworks

During the summer season, roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, Busch Gardens hosts nightly firework shows. With this in mind, I recommend arriving later in the day so you have plenty of stamina to stay up late. The park comes alive at night, with roaming entertainment and light shows. Similarly, riding roller coasters in the dark makes them a little bit more terrifying and that much more fun! Firework shows generally occur at 9:30pm, so plan accordingly.

Don’t Miss Busch Gardens Festivals

As if Busch Gardens wasn’t entertaining enough, they go ahead and add festivals to the mix just for good measure. Most festivals, like the Oktoberfest-themed Bierfest and Food & Wine Festival, are free with admission to the park. Howl-O-Scream, a terrifying Halloween-centric event, is also included with Busch Gardens One-Day admission. In fact, the only festival requiring a special ticket is Christmas Town. This transformative holiday event turns the park into a winter wonderland inspired by the European towns Busch Gardens recreates. It’s a must-do during any Williamsburg Christmas vacation.

Do Eat at the Park

Theme parks aren’t always known for their food. It can be overpriced, basic and bland. Luckily, that’s not the case at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Yes, they may have the standard burgers, pizza and chicken fingers fare, but there’s also a thriving culinary scene. The European influence of the park has carved out a smorgasbord of flavors from around the globe. Menu staples range from English fish and chips, handmade pasta from Italy, savory crepes from France and more. One tip: Pace yourself!

Don’t Forget to Be KIDsiderate

What does KIDsiderate mean? It’s Busch Gardens’ promise to make your visit a family affair. The park embraces the challenges of parenthood with strollers, baby changing tables, nursing rooms and kid-sized menu options. In addition, there’s a height-check station at the entrance of the park so you can easily find out which rides fit your kids. KIDsiderate also refers to designated areas designed especially with little ones in mind.  Land of the Dragons and the Sesame Street® Forest of Fun are two park areas that are bursting with kid fun.

With these Busch Gardens Williamsburg tips you know what to do—and what to avoid. Now, you’re ready to spend the day at one of the most enchanting amusement parks on the East Coast.

For stomach-flipping thrills that make your adrenaline soar, Kings Dominion is the place to be. The Virginia theme park is famous for its thrilling roller coasters, appealing to the daredevil in all of us. On top of that, Kings Dominion features family-friendly attractions where even the youngest park-goers can have some fun. The park opens for the season March 29, 2015. With that in mind, here are five reasons why I can’t wait for Kings Dominion to open.

I Need My Intimidator Fix

Kings_Dominion_(013) IntimidatorI LOVE Roller Coasters! And they don’t’ get much better than the Intimidator 305. Wind-in-your-hair speeds of 90mph and drops of 300 feet make it one of the tallest and fastest coasters on the East Coast. It’s my favorite rush at Kings Dominion and will be my first stop during my visit.

A Revamped Soak City Opens this Spring

It’s always exciting to check out the new additions to Kings Dominion. The park debuts an expanded Soak City on May 23, with new additions like a mega water slide complex, a family-friendly splash zone, and expanded cabana accommodations. The new ride I can’t wait to ride is Paradise Plunge. On this water attraction, the floor drops out from underneath you making you free fall through a series of loops and curves through translucent flume. Sounds like a crazy good time!

Family Fun in the Fresh Air

Kings_Dominion_(024)Let’s face it: Most of us have been cooped up all winter dealing with cold weather and lots (and lots) of snow. We are all ready to for warm, sunny weather which is ideal for a day Kings Dominion. This is especially true April 3-May 3 as they host Spring Bloom. Thousands of flowers adorn the park, along with gorgeous landscaping, to create a true spring paradise. It’s one of the prettiest times of year to visit and certainly a top time for me.

I Found a Great Deal on Kings Dominion Tickets

Knowing I got a great deal on Kings Dominion tickets is surefire way to make my day at the park even better. On Reserve Williamsburg, you can score discount one-day tickets for only $40. Saving $25 dollars per ticket? Yep, that sounds good to me.

More Thrill Rides

Kings_Dominion_(031)I admit it; I’m an adrenaline junkie. I can’t get enough of them. So, after making Intimidator my first stop, other attractions I’m anxiously awaiting to ride again include Volcano, Dominator, Grizzly, and Drop Tower. High-speeds, daunting drops, and twisting turns make the rush of these rides hard to beat.

Who’s ready to visit Kings Dominion? Let me know why you can’t wait to visit the park!

BG Howl of Scream WBURGBusch Gardens Williamsburg is raising the bar on their annual Howl-O-Scream bash, with scarier, more scream-worthy frights. The Williamsburg theme park transforms into a terrifying Halloween haunt September 25 – November 1, 2015. During the increasingly-popular event visitors can engage in a full six weeks of scares. The 17th annual event features fan favorites from years past as well as new haunted houses, scare zones and scary shows.

Scarlett UnearthedFans of The Blair Witch Project will delight in knowing the film’s producer, Robin Cowie, is behind one of the new haunted house – “Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge.” Like The Blair Witch Project, Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge is rooted in dark magic, unexplained phenomena and a haunting, hair-raising story. The story of Scarlett’s Revenger begins during routine maintenance at the park, when an excavation crew uncovered a centuries-old house buried deep beneath the ground. Upon opening its door, a sinister force was unearthed—Scarlett—a furious demon who wields a deadly deck of magical cards she uses to summon her evil minions. Journey below to experience the splintered labyrinth of horrors and the revengeful wrath of this demon scorned.

Two more haunted houses are new this year:

Cornered Busch GardensCornered: It’s 1977 and a picturesque farming community is in an uproar over the ongoing disappearances of its residents. Each time someone goes missing, an intricate corn husk doll is left behind leading many to suspect local corn-farmer Jasper McCobb. The McCobb farm has fallen into disrepair since the death of Jasper’s mother. Could the missing townspeople be somewhere in the maze of maize? Join the search party and find out.

Lumberhack: Hikers beware: the woods hold a terrifying secret. More than 50 years ago a logging camp was abandoned after a horrific accident where saws ripped into human flesh instead of tree bark. Tragically, the loggers perished … only to inexplicably awaken from death sometime later filled with inhuman rage. The undead loggers rampaged until every living thing in the camp had felt the bite of their axes. Now the forgotten lumberjacks lie waiting for unsuspecting campers to stumble into their den of the damned.

LumberhackHaunted Houses returning due to popular demand:

Bitten: Suspicion, darkness and mind-numbing fear surround the “Bitten” house which is set in Eastern Europe in the late 1800s. Full of legends and lore of vampires and the undead that preyed on the innocent, this manor sits by the road upon which all travelers must pass but few return.

Catacombs: Through a ruined cemetery filled with statues lies a tunnel that leads to an underground city. Its history is more terrifying than that of France’s worst revolutions. Deep within these tunnels lie mile after mile of bones—the final resting place for those who are buried here. But all is not as quiet as it appears. As guests venture forth into the dank, dripping corridors of rat infested remains, the voices of the dead begin to speak, and some have taken shape.

CatacombsCut Throat Cove: Heed the warning: Abandon hope all ye who enter. Cut Throat Cove™ is the haven for bloodthirsty, dangerous rogues – where the scurvy dogs, buccaneers and scoundrels go for shelter. Proceed with caution. Alas, something has gone terribly wrong. Within this macabre market, the pirates have been slaughtered and mutiny is afoot. The way out lies with the buried treasure and the blood-curdling screams you hear just might be your own.

Dead Line: Deep underground, construction of the newest line of the Pompeii Metro was moving smoothly until an ancient pipe was accidentally struck. At first, it seemed like steam. Then the mist became thicker, more sinister. Now the strange gas is leaking quickly, and everyone trapped inside is infected. The difficult decision was made to cut off all communication to the outside world. The Dead Line is off the grid.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is throwing visitors for a loop spring 2015. The all-new Tempesto Coaster debuted April 25, 2015, and is the seventh coaster enthusiasts can ride at the Williamsburg theme park. Tempesto has a wicked 154-foot loop, and riders can sit facing both forwards and backwards as they race on the multi-loop thrill ride.

Tempesto will tease riders with a unique sendoff. Unlike other loop coasters that send riders zooming up a lift hill, Tempesto uses linear, synchronous motors to send riders up the giant loop in small super bursts. During this, the coaster will stop in two loading stations before finally getting a full dose of speed – up to 63 mph – sending them soaring through the 154-foot loop.

And that loop – boy, it packs a punch! Not only does the loop turn riders upside down, but also right side up. Yes, that’s right. At one point the train is on the outside of the arc, and will cruise the coaster’s apex in to totally unique way. If this doesn’t amp your adrenaline enough, a second twist is up next! Add in more twists, turns and drops, and a surprises second trip up the iconic Tempesto loop and you have a ride that is sure to be a fan favorite.

Tempesto is located in the Festa Italia land of Busch Gardens. The inspiration of the ride is fictional Italian stunt motorcyclist Tempesto, who is known for his death-defying, can’t-believe-it stunts. Up for the challenge of Tempesto’s daredevil loops. Save time in line and buy your Busch Gardens tickets now.
